A Few Things To Know About Polyurethane Coatings

A polyurethane waterproofing membrane is made from polyurethane as its name would indicate. Polyurethane is a kind of synthetic material. One of the common areas where it is used is in the outdoor clothing industry. It is found in a wide range of forms such as the following:

  • rigid foam
  • flexible foam
  • liquid form
  • casting resin

It was in 1932 that polyurethane was discovered by Otto Bayer, a famed industrial chemist. He discovered the polyaddition that is used for synthesizing various polyurethanes. Polyurethane can be used for outdoor applications such as waterproofing when it is in its liquid form.

Some characteristics of such coating :

When you use polyurethane in its liquid form it can provide you with a permanent waterproofing solution. This would explain the high demand for polyurethane waterproofing membrane. After all, it helps you save a lot of money in the bargain. Such coating normally comes with excellent qualities for repelling water. It can make your roof completely waterproof as well. It also helps that you can apply such coating on as many occasions as you want to. In case you use one coat, it would be called single coated. In the case of many coats, it would be called multicoated. These coatings are pretty durable and flexible as well.

Some disadvantages :

One of the biggest disadvantages of a polyurethane coating such as polyurethane waterproofing membrane is its weight. Indeed, these coatings are plastic, no matter how many layers are there. However, they do have some weight. As far as the fabrics are concerned, they make your clothes heavier than one that has been treated with DWR (durable water repellent). Therefore, if you wish to wear light clothes you should not go for PU coated clothes. These coatings come with a certain amount of volume as well.

Environmental impact :

A polyurethane coating such as a polyurethane waterproofing membrane is always an environmentally sustainable product. They are great for the environment. Truth to be told, by itself polyurethane is not an environment-friendly choice. Rather, its disposal and production do create issues for Mother Nature. However, if you compare it to the likes of fluorocarbon it is harmless. These fluorocarbons are very bad for the environment. They can be bad for your health too. That is why you would see that many outdoor companies do not use them at all. When you compare polyurethane to clothes coated in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) they are a lot better as well.

Conclusion :

One of the main areas where polyurethane coating is applied is the polyurethane waterproofing membrane. The value of such coatings can be understood on damp and rainy days. This is also applicable to places where you have such weather in general. As a rule of thumb, it can be said that these products are the best options for what normally constitutes bad weather. These coatings are strong, and they can resist abrasion as well. This is evident from how clothes coated with such high material can withstand even the sharpest of rock edges.
