5 Hacks to Get Rid of Your Blocked Drains by Yourself!

Has your sink started to clog with a pool of water that doesn't seem to get drained? what you have a got is a case of blocked drains. Now there are many plumbers in Sydney offering drainage solutions.

But here are some Do-It-yourself hacks that you can use to take care of the problem.

  • Bend and Fish!

This is Simple yet effective. Grab a regular wire hanger from your cupboard and make it as straight as you can. Then, bend one end of it to create a hook. Plunge it into the drain cover and get ready for fishing. You are going to fetch all kinds of dirty, hairy stuff from the drain.

  • Vacuum wonder!

You are in luck if you have a wet & dry shop vacuum as it can be a huge help while unblocking drains. First, adjust the vacuum to the liquid setting. Cover the ventilation so that there won’t be a mess. Seal the drain as tightly as you can. Get your creative funk on for this by using an old plunger head for this. Crank up the vacuum turned on its highest capacity so that it will attract the clog up the pipe and into the vacuum bag. There is no 100% guarantee it will work, but you can definitely give this a try.

  • Waterworks!

Get water full of the kettle (or the stove or microwave, whatever is available in your kitchen) and boil the water. Then pour the hot water by taking two or three periodical pauses. This allows water to do its magic between each pour.  This method saves time and hard work when it comes to unblocking a drain. And if you succeed and still have some water left, make yourself a cup of tea with it.

  • Chemistry to the rescue!

Put on some rubber gloves and some safety goggles! we are entering the danger zone. Our next hack is caustic soda which can cause pretty deep chemical burns.  Also known as sodium hydroxide, you can get your hands on some caustic soda from your local hardware shop, but you should always be cautious.

Fill a mop bucket with 3/4 gallons of chilled water and then pour 3 cups full of caustic soda. Stir it with a spoon, use a wooden one.  When it starts fizzing and heating, pour it all into the blocked drain and let it do its job for 20 - 30 minutes, Follow this with a wash of boiling water down the drain. If you feel the need, do it again.

  • Chemistry strikes again!

Mix half a cup table salt and another half a cup of baking soda and pour it down the drain which is blocked. After about 10 to 20 minutes, clean the drain with boiling water. Salt, baking soda, and boiling water will give you a chemical reaction that results in the dissolution of the worst kind of blockages.

Now that you are equipped with these easy and effective hacks, you can face any kind of blocked drains!
